YMMV / Giana Sisters

Go To

  • Common Knowledge: Giana does have a sister, but it's not the redheaded girl on the cover. That's Giana's Super Mode, Punk Giana. Giana's sister is a green-haired girl named Maria, who appears as Giana's twin sister in the original game (as a playable character in multiplayer) and Twisted Dreams (as the Damsel in Distress), and her older sister in the spin-off game Dream Runners (only appearing in the storybook). She's completely absent in the Nintendo DS game.
  • First Installment Wins: Though the sequels are better received than the original, the original Giana Sisters is most iconic for its infamous reputation at being a Mario clone so blatant it was given a cease-and-desist.
  • Growing the Beard: Twisted Dreams seems to be aiming for this. For one, it's not a simple run-and-jump Mario clone like it was in the past. Secondly, the level design and the music are both a far cry from the chipper, cute themes players were accustomed to in the previous titles.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: That the Mario copy so blatant Nintendo got a cease-and-desist on it was remade twenty years later for a Nintendo system (and earned some critical praise for its originality).
  • Vindicated by History: The series was originally scoffed at as a Super Mario Bros ripoff. However, people have since grown to like it on its own merits. The series as a whole was vindicated by Giana Sisters DS being an even better platformer and removing all the Mario-like elements. The re-imaginings are now on Nintendo systems, specifically the Nintendo DS and Wii U.
