  • Alternative Character Interpretation: The writers on the "Inside the Episode" feature treat Renly as being in the right, saying Stannis would make a terrible King. On the other hand, Renly can come across as very unpleasant in the negotiations scene, mocking Stannis horribly for not being as charismatic. He shows he is quite willing to kill his brother so he can take the Iron Throne that is rightfully theirs, showing little remorse at the prospect, and is basically using Appeal to Force in his bid for the Iron Throne. Also, despite Stannis offering Renly terms that would leave him with a lot of power and probably make Renly King eventually, considering Stannis is much older, Renly turns them down. And despite the writers claiming Renly cares about the common people, he was willing to start a war so he could usurp the throne and his method of warfare has left King's Landing starving. Also Renly is willing to kill a lot of people for supporting the rightful King and refused to help Ned Stark which would have prevented the war, leading to the death of one of the most honorable characters in the series.
  • Epileptic Trees: In Talisa's first scene, as she refuses to give her last name, doesn't say which side her family supports and Oona Chaplin had been announced as playing Jeyne—book fans theorised that she was actually Jeyne Westerling using a fake name to avoid being taken hostage.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Meryn Trant beating Sansa and then stripping her, while already vile, is put in an even worse light in Season 5, when it’s revealed that he actually gets a kick out of doing this sort of thing, as a pedophile.
    • Robb and Talisa's first meeting ends with her saying that the Lannister boy was unlucky that Robb was here. Come the end of Season 3, this statement is sadly prophetic for both of them. What's more, Roose Bolton is introduced in this episode.
