YMMV / Fred, The Vampire Accountant

Go To

  • Growing the Beard: The first book in the series, especially in the beginning, reads mostly as a parody of a Wish-Fulfillment Power Fantasy where an Unlucky Everydude suddenly gets a lot of power, gets vengeance on his former high school bullies or at least realizes that they are so beneath him now that vengeance is no longer necessary, hooks up with a hot girl who's ridiculously into him, and ends up as a part of a much cooler and more fantastic world where he has everyone's respect — all of these things happen to Fred; the comedy lies in how he doesn't act like your typical protagonist from those stories and remains a socially awkward bumbler and a bit of a coward even after he Took a Level in Badass. Subsequent books do a lot to flesh out the world, the supporting cast, Fred and Crystal's relationship, and even Fred himself, as they move away from the parody and come into their own as a surprisingly though-out, well-developed Urban Fantasy, even if it remains largely comedic.
