YMMV / Far From the Tree

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: Marie repeatedly disobeys her father, and it's only after she gets injured that she realizes why he was being so protective. Some lessons are only learned the hard way.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • Is Papa hard on Marie because he's trying to protect her from the dangers of the world, or is there a much darker reason behind his overprotectiveness? One possible theory is that he had a previous kit that was killed by a coyote (likely the same one that gave him his scar) and failed to save them. Alternately, there may be a reason why we never see Marie's mother...
    • Papa's abusive behavior toward Marie could also be due to the possibility that she may not even be his daughter at all, and he is an unwilling parent to her, which ties into how real male raccoons don't help raise their young.
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: The coyote that attacks Marie has only a couple moments of screen time, but is liked for its cool design, and for being a genuine threat to the protagonist while only acting on predatory instinct. Papa, on the other hand, is an Abusive Parent to Marie who makes no effort to connect with his daughter, nor gives her any sympathy or comfort when she gets injured.
  • Moe: Marie the raccoon kit is adorably precocious, with the way she stares at the beach with wide and eager eyes while enjoying new sights and sounds and trying to help her uninterested father harvest food. Her own kit is almost exactly the same way.
