- Designated Hero: Mia gets the most attention of the three protagonists and lives the longest out of the three but she spends the first part of the book being rude and rebellious, not even wanting to go on the Moon trip in the first place, and verbally attacking her teacher until the woman bursts into tears. She's nicer once she's away from home, but she can be hard to stand in the first half of the book.
- Nightmare Fuel:
- The premise itself of three teenagers being stranded in space with... something that is never fully explained hellbent on harming them, and the adults that they're supposed to rely on being picked off one by one.
- Midori's doppelganger confronting Mia in DARLAH 1 and splitting her jaw open while asking "Am I pretty now?" a la the Kuchisake-onna legend.
- Tear Jerker:
- Mia finding Antoine's body outside on the surface of the Moon and barely even having time to mourn because she's fleeing for her life.
- The Reveal that Mia didn't make it home, along with her final note in the epilogue, written as she slowly suffocated to death alone on the Moon.
