• Fair for Its Day: A Japanese astronaut is treated equally with the others. As there's also an Austrian astronaut, presumably this is to show that past grudges shouldn't get in the way of the future (though there's a conspicuous lack of astronauts from the other side of the Iron Curtain).
• Ho Yay: Mahoney stows away because he can't stand to be away from his beloved general, who left him behind for being too old. Then there's his narmy change of heart regarding the general's son at the end of the movie. In fairness they have been away from women for over a year...
