Adaption Displacement: Hardly anyone knows that this film was based on a book. To be fair, the plots are almost identical, so those who haven’t read it aren't really missing anything.
Wangst: Lots from Lola (given the title, that's probably sort of the point, but still). Ella eventually calls her on it. It’s awesome!
Ella. She’s an extremely shy girl who finally meets her first friend. While her new friend is ultimately a good influence on her by the end of the film, Ella is still put through a ton of crap because of said friend's lies.
Thanks to Lindsay Lohan's performance, Lola is also a Jerkass Woobie. Her mother calls her "Mary" when she expresses her desire to be called "Lola", and is basically not allowed to complain about moving to New Jersey. Lying to Ella about a fake dead father was awful and uncalled for, but the tall tale was partially motivated to defend her mother's honor when Lola learned Ella's parents were judging her mother for being a single parent.
