  • Angst? What Angst?: Boy Scarlett, you sure pull a quick recovery on the fact that you watch your one true love die, shortly followed by the death of your beloved sister, immediately followed by being told that you've been Gaslighted and manipulated through the whole week by Legend, your sister, and pretty much everybody you've come into contact with. And then Julian and Tella are alive and you're told that half of what you know is lies and Julian isn't who you think he is. But forget all that, there's a party to get to!
  • Anti-Climax Boss: The Count is persuaded rather easily to break off his engagement to Scarlett once it seems that Tella is dead. Turns out, it wasn't really the Count.
  • Not Badass Enough for Fans: Some reviewers of the sequel, Legend, praise Tella for being a more "feminist" lead character than Scarlett, who, while admittedly is quite passive, has every reason to be like that, and Tella makes incredibly stupid and impulsive decisions throughout the sequel because she's haughty and isn't as smart as she thinks she is, but she gets kudos for this over her "wimpy" elder sister. (Not to mention, Scarlett was being manipulated by everyone in the first book, while Tella has a more clear understanding of the rules and has a lot less riding on her decision to play the game again than Scarlett did, so it seems a somewhat unfair comparison.)
  • Strangled by the Red String: The romances for both Dragna sisters happen within the span of a week each. Making things worse is that Julian was literally playing a character and lying to her the entirety of Caraval. Scarlett, for her part, does recognizes that things happened too fast, but still basically decides that she doesn't care after knowing him for two weeks at worst.
