YMMV / Between Dreams and Memories Universe

Go To

  • Archive Panic: The first installment in itself is a Doorstopper... then add the sequel and the spin-off and it is guaranteed that a newcoming reader would be occupied with the fic for at least a week.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In this fic, Niki and Techno were longtime friends and they knew each other personally. Fast forward several months, and Techno has canonically recruited Niki into the Syndicate as a friend and ally.
  • I Knew It!: Sam, the author of the fic, predicted several plot points in her series before they were implemented canonically.
    • Techno and Niki being friends, or becoming friends. In BDAM, the two had been friends for a while before the L'Manberg War for Independence. In canon, the two became friends while being part of the Syndicate together.
    • Quackity's desire for a sense of belonging. Though it has been hinted at since his early days on the SMP, it was never confirmed canonically until the Las Nevadas arc. In BDAM, his backstory explores how he developed such a wish.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Tubbo's execution is the point where Techno and Schlatt cross it, going from genuinely conflicted about their actions to fully embracing their darker natures.
    • Techno crosses it again when he nearly kills Tommy, his own brother, for being part of the new L'Manberg government. Even Techno realizes he's crossed a line, which leads to his retirement in BHAV.
    • As in canon, Dream crosses it with his horrific abuse and gaslighting of Tommy to the point of attempted suicide during the Exile Arc.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Chapter 102 of BHAV, "The Hog Hunt (Part 6)", contains a trigger warning for "VERY graphic descriptions of blood, gore and violence", which include the anvil used to execute Techno very literally crushing his body into a pile of blood and gore that managed to splatter in every direction for a split second, and later in the same chapter, another highly graphic description of what exactly a pickaxe to the eye can do to someone.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • The basis behind some Hybrids' and Ancestors' formation and characterization are horrifically depressing, and worse yet, many of them tie back to characters and/or their backstories in the BDAM Universe canon. This especially applies to fox Ancestors, cat Hybrids, both slime Hybrids and Ancestors, hedgehog Hybrids, both raccoon Hybrids and Ancestors, duck Hybrids, and both salmon Hybrids and Ancestors.
    • In BHAV Chapter 108, "The Army, Fractured (Part 3)", we have Tubbo finding the destroyed remnants of Logstedshire and Tommy's suicide note. As per canon, no doubt he blames himself for what happened, to at least some degree...
  • The Woobie:
    • Raccoon Hybrids and Ancestors as a whole are formed on sadness and pain.
Individuals that find themselves developing racoon features will usually be people overwhelmed by a great pain, whether it be physical, mental, or perhaps even both. In their case the body seems to cope by developing the Hybrid traits to channel the pain into something more focused and easier to manage. Ancestors who pass down this trait are often experiencing more physical than mental pain, and the Ancestor trait is common in incredibly, or even terminally, ill individuals.
    • Tommy. When he arrives in the Dream SMP, he's haunted by his nightmares of his experiences on SMPEarth, but things start looking up for him once Wilbur takes him in and he makes friends with Tubbo. Then he and Wilbur are banished from L'Manberg, and he has to deal with both Wilbur and Techno spiraling mentally and becoming increasingly hostile towards him, with his only other company being Dream, who makes it very clear that he's encouraging their ambitions to destroy L'Manberg for his own gain. He's emotionally broken when Wilbur blows up L'Manberg and Techno nearly kills him while denying that he's his brother. By the time of BHAV, Tommy is suffering from depression and PTSD, which leads to him breaking into George's house to vandalize it, only for the house to catch fire because Dream had covered it in gasoline to set him up. Dream subsequently forces Tubbo to exile him, and takes Tommy to an isolated area where he horrifically gaslights and abuses him until he's totally convinced that Dream is his friend, that he deserves all the abuse, and that everyone else hates him and wants him dead, and eventually results in him killing Jack in perceived self-defense when he tries to rescue Tommy. Poor kid.
