Sixteen participants who had been nominated to be Ultimates at Hope's Peak Academy, but rejected for criminal behavior, are sent to be treated in a locked facility. However, the therapy is interrupted and they are forced into a killing game.
This series contains examples of:
- Artificial Intelligence: Nekomi is an AI designed to serve a therapist for the participants. Naturally, it doesn't take long before she turns on them.
- Foreign Exchange Student: Five of the students are not from Japan, and came to go to Hope's Peak Academy.
- Never Suicide: Cameron was made to look like she hung herself.
- Opening Monologue: The prologue starts with Kaizue Jin, the would-be Ultimate Psychologist, introducing himself.
- Stalker without a Crush: Kaizue had a bad habit of stalking people he was convinced needed therapy in an effort to obtain proof that he was right. This is what got him rejected from Hope's Peak in the first place.
