WMG / Top Cat

Go To

Top Cat is responsible for Dibble's divorce.
In the first two episodes Dibble mentions having a wife, and the Sarge is definitely aware that Dibble is married because Dibble has asked the Sarge to inform his wife of anything he wasn't able to himself. But....
  • Top Cat has mentioned to the Sarge, several times, when answering the police phone that Dibble was too busy flirting with other women to answer the phone.
  • In The Long Hot Winter it's mentioned early into the episode that Dibble's wife left him for Florida, and hadn't returned home five months after; and in subsequent episodes Dibble's referred to as being single and his wife is not mentioned again (until The Movie which is essentially an anachronistic fanfic)
  • Top Cat — as a series — takes place during the 60s. During the 60s you could not just randomly get divorced whenever you wanted and in fact had to have a reason to divorce your spouse, and the divorce would have to be approved by a court. Among the acceptable reasons to divorce your spouse are things like abuse, neglect... or... infidelity.
Top Cat would probably never intentionally ruin Dibble's marriage — unless for the benefit for one of the involved parties. So either Mrs. Dibble has wanted to divorce him for quite some time but was only able to because of TC mentioning to anyone calling the police phone that Dibble was seeing other women... or Top Cat thought that Mrs. Dibble was not a good enough wife to Dibble.
  • Neglect could count. Dibble appeared to be too devoted to his job, even without dealing with Top Cat.

Benny and Catwallader are twins.
In TC minds the baby Benny mentions that he was raised in an orphanage for a portion of his life. However in an earlier episode, A vist from Mother, you see his mother who is quite clearly biologically related to him. Benny's mother had two kittens, Benny and Catwallader from The Missing Heir, but was in a similar situation to Baby Charlie's mother (likely poor and single) and had to give her kittens up while they were too young to remember each other. Later on Mrs. Ball is finally financially stable enough to take care of her kittens so she comes back for the two — gets a better paying job or marries a man who is financially stable enough to take care of her and her kittens — but Catwallader has already been adopted out.
  • You know in all the years I just thought of the whole Benny goes from orphan to having a mother is just continuity flux. But thinking of it that way that she had to give them up and reconnected later just makes the situation seem so more more emotionally invested that I ever thought of before.

Benny will eventually inherit a big amount of money from Mrs. Vandergelt.
Since she's still alive, she might decide to write a new will where he'll get something even if Amy's still around to inherit the bulk of the Vandergelt estate.
