The toons might be previous victims of pressing the red button.
When the toons escape, the announcer yells out "Oh No! The toons have escaped again!" meaning that it happened before with them previous owners of the player's apartment that might have become the toons you encounter in the game. The ending where you get sucked into Toonland and permanently become a toon might be how the characters came to be.Here's a wild guess of what they were before becoming toons:
- Fiddle was a young man who lived in the apartment in the 1930's/40's.
- Schmooze was a middle-aged man who lived with Scoops (who was his pet).
- Pixel and Chisel were two 15-year-old teenagers who lived with their parents before getting sucked into the TV set becoming who they are today. After failing to find them being unaware of them getting trapped in Toonland, their parents committed suicide sometime later. The toons escaping the TV set was the twin's plan the entire time, because deep down inside, they wanted to finally be free and finally go back home.
- Frank was the muscle to some monster back in the day who'd relax with some cartoons before getting Tooned himself.
