The Benjamin seeks out the Lady Crithania after receiving the S.O.S., but for a more sinister reason than most people may think.

The Benjamin is a "salvage ship." She is there to collect scrap from the wreck of the Lady Crithania, not to save people, per se. If there is a hole in the hull from the explosion, her crew will offer to help any survivors they find. However, in other endings where the last boiler room remains sealed, the scrap harvesters are too busy dismantling other parts of the ''Lady Crithania'' to hear the passengers banging on the hull.
