The movie is canon to the main James Bond series

With a few mental swaps (Maxwell —> Moneypenny, Pegasus —> M, Connery —> Bond), it's easy to imagine the movie having happened in the main Bond universe. And let's face it, it's clearly what the film-makers intended.
