CJ7 was developed by aliens who were very clumsy.

The aliens who made CJ7 deliberately gave it to Mr. Chow to test its universal appeal, and since it was succesful, they soon sent more of them for all the children of China... admittedly with mixed results... Chow Ti and his decreased wife were teen parents.
It could explain why they are in poverty. Chow Ti could have impregnated his decreased wife when they are teenagers and had no choice but drop out of school and get married.
