    Dead All Along (POSSIBLE SPOILERS)
If one takes the Shaggy Story example at face value, Dead All Along seems likely. The article specifically says that Zane is dead, and also has Iris' Missing Mom Maude Bellweather describe both her and her father as being dead.

In addition to including the lyrics from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, the remainder of the article's text appears to be from a book called Animals, Their Nature And Uses by one Charles Baker. The particular chapter the text is from is called Sundry Uses of Mammalia.

Put this all together, and what do you have? The town of Broodhollow is some kind of pocket afterlife, where the souls trapped inside of it — including Zane and Iris — are somehow being used as a source of labor or power. Perhaps some sort of entity is feeding off of their memories? Or their fear?

Zane's power is advanced telepathy... and it's driving him insane
Specifically, he has the ability to experience the lives of the antagonists through his nightmares. Episode 2 in particular involved an alien bug creature that practically walked out of a B-movie which seems a little cliche in a lovecraftian horror story, except this bastard was busy serial killing people in the snow and using their blood for a bunch of geometrically-obsessive rituals. Zeke's nightmares during the killer's reign involved finding the Universal Equation, but then a black hole devours him from the inside out, no matter how much research (or other people's body parts) he literally stuffs into it. It's possible that the killer's motivation was to solve an eldritch equation that makes the mathematician forget about math as he learns about it.
