WMG / Bill & Ted Face the Music

Go To

The heroes of the story are the daughters, not Bill and Ted.

The second trailer is already looking that way. Notice when the duo meet the future people, the leader only says "Theodore and Preston" need to write the music, she never gave any first names. So either that'll be the twist, or the two families need to work together to write the song.
  • This is my thought too. The leader says "a song created by Preston Logan, performed tonight, will save reality as we know it", pretty suspicious to not say "...by Wyld Stallyns...".
    • In the end, the difference is split. Billie and Thea are responsible for assembling the song but they don't know how to actually play, leaving Bill and Ted to step up and finish it.
    • So the second of my theory: It was a family effort.

Rufus accidentally changed history.

He travel back to the past to encouraged and told Bill and Ted their band, Wyld Stallyns, will become famous and unite the world with a song they made under the belief it was going to be a Stable Time Loop. However, Rufus may have made things worse. Instead of inspiring them to make the song, Rufus unintentionally made Bill and Ted lazy into thinking they can make the song later rather than making it now in the original timeline. As a result, the song that unites the world never gets made and Bill and Ted become a one-hit wonder, has been band, leading to the new timeline which the 3rd movie takes place.
  • Except Rufus is operating under the direction of the Future Council in the first film, who know about Bill and Ted's history and whose intervention seems set in stone and absolutely necessary for Bill and Ted to become who they are meant to be; if anything, I'd imagine it's more De Nomolos' attempt to change history that actually succeeded in some way, tweaking things so Bill and Ted got a lot of exposure before they're truly ready.
  • Alternatively, he changed history by taking the princesses back (forward?) to them, resulting in the very existence of their Billie and Thea, and caring for them taking precedence. And also causing Billie and Thea to write the song. Either that or he already changed the past.

The Future Princesses didn't come back in time to help the Present Princesses find a reality where they're happy with Bill and Ted....

They traveled back in time to show the Present Princesses what would happen if they decided to leave Bill and Ted. They did it because the Present Princesses may have been considering finally leaving them, but the Future Princesses have had a long and enjoyable life with their Bill and Ted, decided to take the booth and showed them why they should stay. This would explain why the Princesses showed up at the prison to see that reality's Bill and Ted before their Bill and Ted usher them to time jump. The Future Princesses were showing the Present Princesses the alternate realities of Bill and Ted if they leave, so to make them realize that they had it well with them in their present time. This is what motivated the Present Princesses to help out with getting Face The Music played throughout time.

Dennis' laser doesn't actually kill people. It's simply a teleporter calibrated to send them to Hell in 2020.

This is why the group from 2020, Ted's dad from 2025, and Bill, Ted, and Dennis from 2030+ all show up at Hell around the same time. This is also why Dennis (as well as the SWAT van), despite not being alive in the first place to have been killed by the beam, winds up there as well.

Dennis is Death from another timeline.

They really do look alike. Well, more likely the creators just wanted to reuse character designs/costumes, but there might have been a deeper meaning to it.

Future Earth uses an Alternative Calendar
Future people in Face The Music get the years the previous two movies were set wrong. The Rufus hologram said he first met Bill and Ted in 1989 when the first movie was set in '88. And the Great Leader says Bill and Ted's concert happened 25 years ago implying Bogus Journey was set in 1995 when Ted's comment about the princesses being in the 20th century for five years would set it in 1993.The newspapers and magazines that appear in the end credits of Bogus Journey are alternatively dated 1991 and 2691. The 2691 issues are likely future reprints but maybe the 1991 issues are also reprints by future people who aren't used to the Gregorian calendar. The year Bill and Ted unites the world could become Year 1 or 0 or else Earth now uses some Universal Universe Time alongside other planets.
Satan's comments about all time happening at once in Hell in the Bill & Ted Go To Hell comic is canon here
It would explain why when Bill and Ted die in 2067, everybody else isn't acting like they've been in Hell for decades.

Dennis wasn't initially built as Bill & Ted's executioner.
He was initially built as their protector. The previous movie proved not everyone is happy with the Utopia the Wyld Stallyns created, Dennis was supposed to be a future robot to protect them just in case someone pulled the same shtick as the previous movie, it would explain why he is so bad at his job, and why he is so neurotic and guilty about his actions, he is literally doing the opposite of what he was initially built for.

Kid Cudi is Station themself.
At the end of the movie, before the restoring lifestream returns him to his own place and time, Kid Cudi turns to Bill & Ted and declares 'Station', which the duo promptly return. This could just be a Shout-Out or other gag, or even an indication that Cudi is a Wyld Stallyns fan. Except:
  • Throughout the movie, Kid Cudi has a vast knowledge of quantum and temporal physics. He also is able to hook up the power for all the instruments. Station are the greatest geniuses in the universe, and built the Good Robot Bill & Ted in minutes out of spare parts.
  • Great Leader says that the whole band must be present for The Song. Bill & Ted, the Princesses and Death are all there. If one allows for the good robots not counting (or maybe having been recycled into Billie and Thea's awesome mix machine, thus there), that still leaves out Station. Unless they were there in another form.
