- Chance is the illegitimate son of the old man. Why else would he be on the property if the old man didn't have some responsibility for him. It also explained why he was hidden from records.
- The doctor knew that Chance was just a simple gardener. That much is pretty obvious. But why didn't he tell anyone? He felt obliged by doctor-patient confidentiality.
