  • Write Who You Know: After "Cat Person" went viral, Kristen Roupenian clarified that it wasn't literally autobiographical, but was a fictional account "inspired by a small but nasty encounter I had with a person I met online." A later essay by Alexis Nowicki in Slate went into further detail, explaining that Robert was based on an Ann Arbor, Michigan man using very specific details about his physical description and personal preferences, and that Margot was drawn in part from Nowicki herself, the man's ex-girlfriend. Roupenian, who had never actually met Nowicki in person, confirmed this when Nowicki contacted her about it in 2021, after several years of suspecting that the story was inspired by her relationship with the man.
