- Inspiration for the Work: Campbell said that the inspiration for the story came from a childhood experience. His mother and aunt were identical twins, so the young Campbell had problems telling them apart. One time, Campbell had a conversation with who he thought was his mother, but she treated him strangely coldly and aloof, something he found quite terrifying, and it was later he found out that he had actually been talking to his aunt. As an adult, Campbell thought back at the terror the younger him felt from not being able to tell who was who, and this became the nucleus of the story.
