• Fandom Nod: Kazue makes one after breaking up with Light, mentally commenting how L and Light should get together. With how popular that ship is in the fandom, especially fanfiction, it can’t be helped to think it’s a nod to them.

• Inspiration for the Work: The title of the fic “We All Need A Hero” is taken from the song from Death Note The Musical of the same name. The chapter titles being the song lyrics matched appropriately to the events that transpire in said chapter.
  • The author also states that previous fanfics of the same premise inspired them such as We Will Stumble Through Heaven by Susieboo, and to a lesser extent The Most Cursed of Hands by Brownbeard_the_Pirate, both stories that never finished to author’s dismay.
• Suspiciously Similar Substitute: A commenter on chapter 9 pointed out why Kazue wasn’t named Shiori as a reference to Shiori Akino, a some-what similar character exclusively featured in the live-action film from 2006 who the commenter assumed was her inspiration. Both are Light’s girlfriend, we’re also longtime childhood friends and mainly they were used by Light for his own goals, though Kazue’s case was much less severe or deadly. Ultimately though; the author stated to have never seen any of the live action films and has only vaguely heard about Shiori, who wasn’t on his mind when writing Kazue. Any of the similarities the two sharing being by complete coincidence.
