Trivia / VeggieTales Episode 1 "Where's God When I'm S-Scared?"

  • Serendipity Writes the Plot: It was originally planned to show the lions in the lion's den. However this was scratched because fur was notoriously difficult to animate in CG at the time, and would've made an already nightmarish production so much worse, so it was decided they would be conveyed only with their eyes.
  • Throw It In!
    • The thunder and lightning that occurs during the second story was an unfixable rendering glitch that caused the sky to flash. To work around it, the creators added a thunder clap sound effect.
    • The "Silly Songs with Larry" segment was literally just something Phil Vischer threw in for shits and giggles. He had no intention of doing it for every episode and only considered it once viewers wrote in complaining of its absence in the second video.
  • Troubled Production: Being the very first video of its kind and the first of an intended series, all when CGI was still in its infancy, this first installment had a whale of a time getting made thanks to a combination of inexperience and time and money constraints. The project was funded by a Christian mail-order service, with customers ordering the video while it was still in production, meaning that the creators were legally required to finish the project on a stone-set date, lest they be charged with mail fraud. The small crew were tasked with writing, designing and animated the entire film themselves, only to hire two more animators during production when it was clear than Phil Vischer wouldn't be able to achieve the level of animation quality he was aiming for by himself. Similarly, when he decided to add musical numbers, his wife Lisa, a music major, suggested they hire Kurt Heinecke, their church's music director and a skilled synthesizer player, to be the arranger after hearing Phil try to plunk out "God Is Bigger" on his beat-up old guitar. And all of this stretched the already minuscule budget to its absolute limits. Vischer later joked that the title was appropriate because the whole process was terrifying.
