Trivia / Tom T. Hall

Go To

  • Black Sheep Hit: His hits tended to be either his more comedic songs, or sentimental pieces like "I Love" and "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine", which led some people (including Bob Dylan in a bizarre speech at the 2015 MusiCares gala that left many people scratching their heads) to write him off as a purveyor of Glurge. Hall was proud of those songs, but generally put his more poignant and serious songs out as album tracks (the exact opposite of the Nashville wisdom of the time that album tracks should be Padding). He could get very dark at times ("Mama Bake a Pie", "Turn it On, Turn it On, Turn it On" and "Trip to Hyden" being three notable examples).
  • Breakthrough Hit: "Ballad of Forty Dollars" in 1968.
  • Follow the Leader: He's admitted that Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billy Joe" inspired him to adopt his signature Slice of Life storytelling style.
  • Revival by Commercialization: A rewritten version of "I Like Beer" was used in Michelob Ultra commercials in 2018.
