Trivia / The Who Sell Out

Go To

  • Breakthrough Hit: "I Can See for Miles", taken from this album, turned out to be The Who's first single that did any kind of business on the pop charts in the U.S. Along with the band's appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival the year it was released, it established The Who as a major band on the other side of The Pond after several years of trying.
  • Parody Retcon: The band only claimed that the commercials were parodies after they found out they wouldn't be paid for them.
  • Reality Subtext: The band's penchant for smashing instruments meant that they were in debt for much of their early career, so they recorded as many real advertisements as they could around this time.
  • Similarly Named Works: Younger listeners might not realize the Top Gear jingle has nothing to do with the greatest automobile magazine and TV series...in the world, but rather the '60s music radio program.
