• Author's Saving Throw: This episode was produced in response to negative feedback to Herb’s Downer Ending in his first appearance.
• What Could Have Been:
  • A scene of Herb running after a train to ask which Springfield it was headed. This was later reused in "Burns, Baby Burns" in season eight.
  • Bart's original line before he breaks the couch was "I do this for the Soviet Union". This was cut and replaced with "I do this for Stainmaster Carpet", when the Soviet Union broke up between writing of the script and airing.
  • Joe Frazier originally lost the fight against Barney in the script, but Frazier's son objected and it was changed to Barney losing.
  • The writers originally wanted George Foreman to guest-star but ended up going with Frazier instead due to Foreman being unavailable.
