- California Doubling: This film is set in the state of Washington, but shot in various locations in both Denmark and Sweden. This was done because Lars Von Trier has a fear of flying and refuses to film outside continental Europe.
- Fake American:
- Sofie Gråbøl is Danish but plays the victim Jack is dating from the third incident.
- Both Edward Speleers (who played the police officer named Ed from the second incident) and Osy Ikhile (the Military Man from the fifth incident) are English.
- Yu Ji-tae (the only Asian-American detainee from the fifth incident) is South Korean.
- Newbie Boom: Despite the film being seen by a lot of critics as being one of von Trier's more self-reflective works, the film has become a gateway into the world of his films for a lot of cinephiles who've never watched any of his works before. To wit: Go on a site like Letterboxd and take a shot every time you encounter a post of someone saying that this is their first von Trier film they've ever watched.
- What Could Have Been: The film was originally announced as a TV Miniseries before being reworked as a film.
