Trivia / The Gate

  • Sleeper Hit: This unheralded film with a largely unknown cast finished a completely-unexpected #2 at the box office on its opening weekend, apparently a beneficiary of the horrible reviews that the #1 film, Ishtar, had gotten. Discouraged from seeing the Beatty-Hoffman film, enough filmgoers were intrigued by the advertising for The Gate that it made back 2/3rds of its $6 million budget on just that opening weekend, and word-of-mouth sustained it for the rest of the summer. It ended up grossing $13 million.
