- Actor-Inspired Element: It was Lee Marvin's idea to have Walker whisper to Carter's secretary without letting the audience hear his threatening words.
- Breakthrough Hit: For John Boorman.
- Enforced Method Acting: Lee Marvin didn't think John Vernon was good for his role, as the actor "wasn't strong enough to contend with him". During filming, Marvin punched Vernon in the stomach during a fight scene, causing Vernon to cry out and protest that he was an actor, not a fighter. But Vernon followed it with a visibly-increased energy and anger.
- Hostility on the Set: There was tension between Lee Marvin and Angie Dickinson, as they'd previously worked together on The Killers (1964), where he dangled her out of a window, which she never forgave him for. Furthermore, Marvin felt that her part should have gone to Peggy Lee.
