• Crossdressing Voices: Izel is voiced by Olivia J Brown in the original English version and Cecilia Guerrero in the Latin American Spanish dub.
• Descended Creator: The series was created by Sofia Alexander and she voices K'i'ik, Meque, and Nelli.
• Multiple Languages, Same Voice Actor: Yaotl is voiced by Alejandro Vargas Lugo in both the original English version and in the Latin American Spanish dub. Ditto with both Nelli and Meque, both voiced by Sofia Alexander in both dubs.
• Screwed by the Network: After attempting to do a weekly release with advertisements, Crunchyroll, after the fifth episode, released the entire series at once the day after Christmas with minimal advertising, then quickly pivoted to advertising the Winter 2021 anime season.
• Troubled Production: When Raye Rodriguez tweeted about High Guardian Spice's production troubles (a budget far smaller than it needed, an extremely tight schedule that didn't let them fix anything, and poor marketing) Sofia Alexander backed him up and mentioned that Onyx Equinox also had about a 1/3rd of the necessary budget. Onyx Equinox got off lighter due to coming after High Guardian Spice and the studio unionizing, but the process was apparently difficult enough that Alexander threatened to walk to help push it through.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Zyanya was originally conceived as a man and the creators considered making her a Muxe, a gender found in Zapotec culture.
  • Xanastaku was originally going to have a twin brother while K'in was an only child. As they developed, the two characters merged into one and they decided to make K'in and Yun in reference to the Hero Twins story.
  • Concept art shows Yaotl was going to have a more detailed face as in Aztec jaguar depictions, but budget constraints prevented that.
• Word of God: Several podcasts made by the crew clarify aspects not made clear in the narrative. Among these are that Maak is neither Izel (and Nelli's) nor the twins biological father and that the unnamed god in the council in the first episode alongside Quetzalcoatl, Tezcatlipoca and Xipe Totec is Huitzilopochtli (with the disingretagration of the host apparently being some sort of "solar consumption").
