• Content Leak: The album was leaked several months prior to release. Additionally, the raw footage of the "So Heavy" music video was leaked onto Reddit, which prompted Grimes to finish the video and release it officially.
• Cut Song: "Dark Souls," "Death Angels," and "Shall I Compare Thee."
• In Memoriam: Dedicated to Lauren Valencia, Grimes' manager and friend who passed away from cancer in 2019. Also to Garrett Lockhart, aka i_o, who died after the album was released.
• Troubled Production: Went through much more Development Hell than previous releases due to label problems and the aforementioned content leak.
• Wild Mass Guessing: On a livestream, she said that "Idoru" was about "a really sick artist she fell in love with." Obviously fans immediately tried to guess who it was, the most popular being her ex Jaime Brooks or Nicole Dollanganger. People cited Grimes' devotion to Dollanganger's music (such as starting a label solely for her) and the line "You're so cool 'cos you don't think you're cool" as a reference to the song "You're So Cool" as evidence for the latter.
