Trivia / Mad God (Phil Tippett)

Go To

  • Creator Breakdown: Unsurprisingly, yes. Towards the end of production, Tippett started to loathe making the movie, having spent the better part of three decades creating it (see below). At one point, he had a psychotic break, and had to check into a psych ward to recover.
  • Extremely Lengthy Creation: Phil Tippett came up with the initial idea for Mad God in 1987. He created a short test clip in the 1990s but, unsure of what direction the project would take, put things on hold for nearly 20 years to research subjects like theology, archeology, paleontology, and psychoanalysis to flesh out the original concept. Work began in earnest around 2008, when other members of Tippett's studio discovered the test clip and urged him to complete it. With the help of Kickstarter campaigns and people volunteering their time, Tippett was able to finish his magnum opus.
  • No Budget: Being produced outside the major studios, the budget was incredibly low even by stop-motion standards— Wikipedia puts it at as little as $150,000.
