• Troubled Production: Patti Smith hired John Cale as producer basically because she liked the cover photo of his album Fear, but while she wanted a person who would confine himself to solving technical problems, she got, in her own words, "a total maniac artist". She and Cale quarrelled a lot, and Cale remembered the process as being very confrontational, but she eventually conceded that he drew something out of her that nobody else might have done, and regarded him as "a brother who gave me a helping hand."
