• Amateur Cast: As with all Safdie brothers films, most of the cast is composed of non-professional actors. Caleb Landry Jones is in fact the only trained actor in the whole film.
• Approval of God: The real Ilya did not set himself on fire and was alive when the film was released. However, he was reportedly very happy with "his" death scene.
