The timeline of the Harry Potter story was moved thirty years forward; the author considered moving The Owl House timeline back but decided against it because that would mean that Luz wouldn't get to say for example, "Yikes, my dude."
Hermione was supposed to have come with Ron in the author's initial plan, simultaneously freaking out and geeking out, taking all the tracks at Hexside just like Luz. However, as the author mapped the story out further and further, adding more characters and plots and so on, they didn't have much for Hermione to do, so they had to cut her out.
The author actually struggled for a bit thinking about what type of Magic he wanted Ron to explore. Construction seemed like the obvious answer, and there are a few crack fan-theories that Ron actually is a seer so they also considered Oracle magic. They ultimately settled on Abomination because it seemed the least likely, and they thought it would be fun to have Ron, who severely lacks confidence, try to invest himself and excel as best he can in a type of magic we know from canon is supposed to be difficult. Also because the Abominations are another way to parallel him to Amity, who Ron will deal with a lot in this Fic (not in a romantic way).
