Trivia / Baddy

  • Queer Character, Queer Actor: Sweetheart's gender is portrayed as ambiguous, with them wearing suits normally and a dress at the Big Theater Bank Ball, when most of the citizens of Peaceful Planet Earth all wear suits (men) and dresses (women) exclusively. Their introduction also has Goody and Pocky being confused over their gender presentation and the fact that they kissed the male Baddy. note
    • Miya Rurika, their actress, uses the term "ジェンダーフリー" (which can be romanized as "gender-free") in an introductory Youtube video's Question 6, which relates to her occupation. The answer and the translation of that answer is as follows.
    Japanese: 演じること、歌うこと、踊ること。そして、これからはジェンダーのない、ジェンダーフリーな表現者として色んなことに挑戦していきたいです。
English: Acting, singing, dancing. And from now on I'd like to challenge myself with new opportunities as a non-gendered, or gender-blind performer.
    • Please note that ジェンダーフリー is a so-called wasei word, which means that it sounds like English but the word has actually been coined in Japan and may not have the meaning an English speaker would first associate it with. In this case, ジェンダーフリー could be used as a term to describe gender equality or to say that something is gender-blind. So while Miya Rurika indeed used the word "gender-free" in katakana, it may not have the exact same connotations in Japanese as the first translation above attributed to it. (On the other hand, ジェンダーのない or non-gendered performance was also mentioned.)
