• What Could Have Been:
  • The film was originally intended to be a two-reel documentary about the Merchant Marine, but as the war continued, enough combat action footage became available that the project was changed to a feature film.
  • Edward G. Robinson and George Raft were initially cast in the starring roles. Eventually, Robinson had to drop out to do Destroyer at Columbia Pictures and was replaced by Raymond Massey, while Raft was put into Background to Danger and was replaced by Humphrey Bogart.
• Working Title: Heroes Without Uniforms.
