- Crane's vicious beating by teenage bullies in Paean of the Bells is an absolutely brutal scene. As nasty as he is in the present, he wasn't always like that, and the bullies are brutally beating up on him just For the Evulz while everyone with the authority to do something about it looks the other way. The gang's leader was the mayor's son. It's no wonder he's so misanthropic as an adult.
- The fate of Karen and Marilyn Keeny in Small World, crossing over with Nightmare Fuel. Marilyn in particular is completely innocent and has no idea why Crane is so angry with her, and even the girls feel sympathy for her when Crane tortures her. Karen does know, and tries and fails to protect her daughter. Her last moments are desperate apologies while Crane coldly calls her a liar.
- When Crane is ill in April Showers, he hallucinates various people standing by his bedside, including his mother and father - both of whom he killed himself, and he notes that the real ones were never there when he was sick.
- The flashback scene in Noel, which highlights Crane's horrible childhood and his relationship with his physically and psychologically abusive great-grandmother.
