Tear Jerker / We Were Young Once

• Much of the fic is this, if you know from the Legendarium what will happen to many of these characters.
• Oropher's disastrous charge in the War of the Last Alliance, and its consequences: Celebrin and Oropher are dead, as are many of their soldiers, and Thranduil is badly injured.
• Serataron's death.
  Serataron was on the point of succumbing to his wounds, and too far gone to speak. Yet as Thranduil hovered over him and took his hand, he saw that he recognized him. It seemed almost another lifetime when they had known one another so well, an age ago on the shores of Lindon before either of them had even heard of Greenwood or Mordor. Yet it all ended here, slain in the dust.
• Lindóriel's death is especially painful for how drawn-out it is. She's shot with a poisoned arrow and almost dies that night, but Thranduil gives her his strength and with the aid of elixirs keeps her alive for another four years until finally she chooses to die.
  Thranduil continued to hold her in the sudden stillness, insensible to everything but the crippling feeling that some vital part of himself had been torn away with her, something he did not yet know how to live without. A violent trembling seized him as though the chill of the frost outside had clutched his heart, and an overwhelming well of grief rose to drown him. There was no mercy in the world, no pity. Nothing was sacred.
  A raw howl of rage and despair reverberated through the halls of Arthrand Lasgalen. Then it was swallowed again by profound silence.
• Sauron's storm puts the Greenwood on the verge of a famine, and to buy food Thranduil has to sell his crown, Legolas's, Lindóriel's, and his brothers'.
