  • Roman bitterly says that obviously the "great rewards" they'll get for destroying Beacon will make everything worth it. His tone makes it clear that he's getting nothing out of this, and would really rather just go back to robbing people. Cinder's silence implies she's beginning to question whether it's really worth it too—and she's the one who is getting something out of destroying Beacon.
  • Chapter 54: Adam gives Mercury some advice about Ruby, and teases him a little about loving someone. Mercury is vehement that he does not love her and will never love her, and Adam realizes there's a major disconnect.
Adam: What is love to you, Mercury?
Mercury: Love is smashing a bottle of beer over someone's head to help them grow stronger. Love is breaking someone's fingers one by one so they can get used to pain. Love is kicking someone's crutches away so they can learn to walk. Love is a man beating his wife to death in front of her son because she doesn't want him anymore.
  • Chapter 56: Jaune confronts Roman about Cinder's plan, asking why he didn't warn someone. Roman snaps that he's been massively flamboyant about everything—there is no way the authorities are blind to what he's done. They're just not doing anything.
  • Chapter 57: When Cinder unleashes her Maiden powers, Jaune convince her to stop by saying Snow is scared. When she tries to pet him, he flinches. She then orders him to sit, and leaves.
"Snow." Cinder's voice was even, but she didn't look back. "Sit."
Its hind quarters touched the floor. Cinder drew and released a long breath.
    "Stay."
It tilted its head, confused but eager to obey, eager to show how smart it was and why she should be proud of him - why she should praise and love him. It wagged its tail once against the tiles, waiting for the next command or the reward of praise and affection it so desired.
Cinder walked out and closed the door behind her, vanishing into the night.
Jaune sat against the back wall, head in his hands, doing his best to ignore the puppy whimpering and scratching at the door, asking where its mommy had gone.
