Tear Jerker / Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Go To

  • The opening scene is that of Caesar's funeral, with Maurice and the others honoring their fallen leader.
  • The look of despair on Noa's face when Mae crushes his eagle egg needed for his bonding ritual. Later, when Noa tries to bond with his father's eagle the first time, he is unsuccessful and gets his arm clawed.
  • Noa finding the body of his father Koro in the ruins of their village after Proximus's apes burn the place down and abduct the rest of their clan.
  • The memory, name and some words of Caesar being abused and tarnished by the apes of Proximus, who clearly don't live the way he intended, including practicing slavery while Caesar's society tried to be fair and not applying Ape Shall Never Kill Ape. The Order of Caesar is not spared from this either, as they believe that humans and apes peacefully coexisted, something that did not happen. To summarize, the legacy of Caesar had already died long before the events of the movie take place.
  • Mae's expression when looking at the feral humans shortly before Proximus's apes attack, clearly despairing at how low the remnants of humanity outside the bunkers and other secure locations have fallen due to the Simian Flu, which is still a danger to the remaining intelligent human population three centuries later.
  • While exploring the bunker, Noa and his friends find a children's picture book about a zoo. They see various animals being kept in cages as different humans gawk at them. Eventually they get to a gorilla, and then turn the page to see a chimpanzee. The three look at each other and realize that Proximus was right about one thing: humans did subjugate apes when they were the dominant species.
    • Worse is that despite the obvious unease this causes them, they still put their trust in Mae. It thus makes her being willing to sacrifice their lives for the cause of humanity that much more hurtful when it happens.
  • Raka being swept up by the current in the river after saving Mae, with his last words being "Together...strong..." With him dies the last of Caesar's teachings about apes and humans trying to live together in peace — and by rescuing Mae, Raka unwittingly doomed the two species to future conflict, since by the end of the film Mae is able to reestablish radio communication between hidden pockets of intelligent humans, who will likely go to war with the apes to try and retake the planet.
  • Mae betraying Noa and his friends by activating the flood inside the bunker while they and the whole Eagle Clan all still inside just so that Proximus doesn't get a hold of any human technology. What makes it especially galling is that drowning is the way Raka died, and it only happened because he saved Mae from drowning. Yet now she is willing to condemn innocent apes to this same fate. The look on her face after she does this indicates that even she feels some degree of shame for it.
  • Noa and Mae's final confrontation is tense...and then we see that Mae has been hiding a gun under her coat this whole time, just in case it got heated. It gives more credence to Noa's thoughts that Proximus had a point on humanity's greed, and that maybe no concordance between apes and humans can ever be achieved. Ultimately, Noa and Mae part on less than friendly terms, knowing that she will do whatever it takes to ensure that humanity reclaims their dominance of Earth, with Noa only being able to blindly hope that giving her the necklace Raka gave him will make her have second thoughts on that.
