Volume 1: The Maskmaker
- Natara dealing with Shawn's condition after the Miami debacle.
- The death of Brittany Emerson made the Maskmaker case go personal.
- As it did, Mal realizes that Captain Yeong has a daughter about the same age.
Volume 3: The Hunters
- In 3-8, Mal had been dealing with Tasha's demise at the Hunter's clutches left him crushed and took a leave from the SFPD for about three weeks (up until 4-4).
- Throughout those weeks, he attended the reporter's funeral, took up Maria's leave offer, barely touched the food Sean (from Rip Van Winkle's) brought to him, and watched a retrospective from KQRM celebrating the life of the late reporter.
