While London is being bombed, we see the Londoners gathered in shelters, rescue crews asking for volunteers to help dig others out, and one old man numbly trying to process the fact that his favorite pub has been destroyed. And of course, Andy being reunited with his family in London only for them to be killed when the church gets hit while he is helping find other survivors.
The Luftwaffe fighter squadron seen laughing and partying early in the film is shown quietly sitting around the dinner table, with lit candles placed in front of (many) empty seats. Remember the squadron commander's little brother, introduced in the beginning of the film? He's not here, but we see the commander staring at one of the candles...
