So You Want To / Be The Next Larry David

Go To

Larry David, the creator of Seinfeld, is considered by many as among the best comedy writers in American history.

Necessary Tropes

  • Larry uses an unique creative writing style. He first writes ideas up in a note book that are inspired by mudane events in his life and then considers worst case scenarios in them, like if he responded to someone in a negative way, to create conflict in his stories. He then constructs an outline of the scene with the cast improvising the dialogue, the social interaction making the humor genuine and spontaneous. The final phase is editing together the best takes for an ideal flow, not focusing much on the continuity.

Suggested Themes and Aesops

  • Much of the humor in Seinfeld is based on repeated moments of irony and unfortunate coincidence, with barely any Character Development and very little sentimentality. Larry's self-portrayal in "Curb Your Enthusiasm" turns him into a Schlemiel archetype who's constantly sabotaging himself in every episode while encouraging viewers to question various issues.

  • Observational Humor: A common theme throughout Larry's works is taking an everyday problem and then blowing it out of proportion.
