Recap / Yu Gi Oh Anime S 4 E 163 Self Destruction

Go To

Yami and Téa awake after their sojourn from the train and are found by a sage named Ironheart, his granddaughter Chris, and their dog Sky. Yami asks Ironheart to hold on to the Eye of Timaeus until he feels ready to use it again, since it wouldn't work for him in his last duel. In an attempt to rescue Yugi, Yami enters the valley where lost souls come. He enters a circle containing Yugi's soul and tries to get him back, but Yugi angrily challenges him to duel. There, Yugi uses the same strategy that Yami used in his duel with Rafael, and activates the Seal of Orichalcos, much to Yami’s dismay. But in the end, Yami does the right thing and defeats Yugi, therefore defeating the darkness within him.

Tropes appearing in this episode:

  • All There in the Manual: The card text for Divine Wind, according to Yu-Gi-Oh Wiki, hits your opponent with the damage you would have taken from an effect and adds 200 damage on top of that. The English and Japanese versions instead say that it doubles the damage the player would have taken.
  • The Bus Came Back: Giant Soldier of Stone makes an appearance in the climax as part of Yami Yugi's strategy to try and talk some sense into Yugi.
  • The Cameo: The spirits of the lost Duelists include Weevil, Arkana, Bandit Keith (who was still alive) and the Paradox Bros (nothing bad happened to them at the end of their episodes).
  • Continuity Nod: In the climax, Yami Yugi plays Swords of Revealing Light and gets Giant Soldier of Stone onto the field. Unfortunately, Yugi summons Catapult Turtle and starts launching his monsters at Yami Yugi's Life Points. Yami Yugi ultimately uses Divine Wind to win.
  • Fearful Symmetry: Yugi and Yami start their duel with the exact same hands, and they both play Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts on their first turns.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Yugi, normally the epitome of Nice Guy, gives Yami a blistering What the Hell, Hero? speech for playing the Seal of Orichalcos. Granted, it ends up being a Cruel to Be Kind situation, but still...
