Recap / Yu Gi Oh Anime S 1 E 8 Everythings Relative

Go To

A daring escape begins at Pegasus's castle. Mokuba, Seto Kaiba's younger brother, uses a bedsheet ladder to escape from a tower. By the time the guards realize he's escaped, he's gone into the forest in search of duelists.

Pegasus's plans are slowly made clear: he's working with KaibaCorp's crooked Board of Directors; if he defeats Kaiba and Yugi for them, they'll give him control of the company for his own reasons. He kidnapped Mokuba so they could use him as a figurehead, but the boy's escape doesn't trouble him at all—it factors into his plans.

Mokuba steals a random kid's deck and Starchips and challenges Yugi to a duel, claiming it's his fault Kaiba lost, deserted him, and his company. Meanwhile, Kaiba himself is accosted by two of Pegasus's thugs, and jumps out the window rather than let himself be captured. Assuming he couldn't have survived the fall, they take his deck and nothing else.

Yugi wagers some of his own chips on the match and manages to talk Mokuba down, but Kemo, Pegasus's hired goon, refuses to give the duelist his Starchips back. He slaps them into the water, resetting some of Yugi's progress, and then recaptures Mokuba. He'll take him back to Pegasus unless Yugi can defeat a specially-prepared opponent for him.

Kemo's mystery opponent is revealed to be... the ghost of Seto Kaiba, who wears his old school uniform and wields his deck! Yugi doesn't stand a ghost of a chance...

This episode contains examples of:

  • Adapted Out: The "duel" between Yami Yugi and Mokuba in the manga had Yami Yugi summoning Celtic Guardian on his second turn and using it to cut Crocodilus in half.
  • Bedsheet Ladder: Mokuba tries to use this in his escape attempt. It doesn't work because it doesn't reach the ground, so he falls the rest of the way.
  • Bowdlerize: In the original version, the two goons that corner Kaiba are wielding guns, while the English dub makes them point their fingers at him. The scene in which Kaiba leaps out the window is also removed from the dub, and instead happens off-screen, yet weirdly enough, early promotional videos for the English dub did retain that scene, to the point where it was used in an old Sky One promo.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Mokuba's Man-Eating Plant and Krokodilus are blown to bits by Yami Yugi's Winged Dragon Guardian of the Fortress #1.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Mokuba summons Krokodilus on his second turn and has it attack Yami Yugi's Winged Dragon. Given that Winged Dragon is stronger, it automatically counterattacks and destroys Krokodilus.
  • Lighter and Softer: The Mind Crush has made Kaiba feel "off" and he's abandoned KaibaCorp to find himself. This is in contrast to the manga where the Mind Crush put him into a coma.
  • No-One Could Have Survived That: Pegasus's goons assume Kaiba's dead without checking first.
  • Something We Forgot: In his haste to get away, Kaiba inadvertently left his deck behind...
  • You Are Too Late: Yugi and the others arrive back at docks just as the boat with the unfairly eliminated duelist is heading out.
