Recap / What If Gwen Stacy Had Lived

Go To

The issue opens with Peter "talking" to Gwen on the bridge where she died as he reflects on the circumstances of her death and how he will always wonder if he could have saved her. The Watcher, observing this discussion, ponders if it would comfort Peter to know that Gwen did survive in another reality and begins to view this world, which diverges when Spider-Man chooses to jump after Gwen rather than use his webbing to catch her. He is able to save her life, subsequently telling her the truth about his life as Spider-Man and proposing to her.

  • Power of Love: It is Harry getting in the way of his father attacking Spider-Man that helps Norman Osborn regain his mind.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After Jameson reveals Spider-Man's identity and brags about how he intends to hound Peter until he has no choice but to turn himself in, Robertson declares that he cannot continue working for someone capable of the heartless things Jameson has just done and quits the Bugle, turning his attention to comforting Gwen as he offers to try and help Spider-Man's public reputation.
  • Sudden Downer Ending: All things are good at first: Peter manages to save Gwen’s life by diving after her instead of trying to catch her with his webs. Though Gwen is horrified that he is Spider-Man at first she gets over it when Peter reveals the truth of how her father died and she even accepts his marriage proposal. Peter is able to confront Norman/Osborne and, thanks to Harry’s help, manages to get though to him allowing Osborn to get psychiatric help and keep his friendship with Harry intact. Everything looks like a Golden Ending, but….
    • Before then Osborn sent proof that Spider-Man is Peter Parker to J. Jameson who not only reveals that publicly in his paper but also places a warrant for his arrest. Hearing that her nephew is Spider-Man causes Aunt May to faint/have a heart attack from the shock and Peter is forced to flee right after his wedding to avoid being arrested. And with his identity revealed and without his suit he fears becoming a target for his enemies, even fearfully contemplating the idea that he may have to become the menace Jameson always claimed he was in order to survive.
    • But there is a Hope Spot: Robbie quits the Bugle and promises Gwen that they will share the REAL story of Spider-Man to clear Peter's name. Harry is also grateful to him for helping his dad in this timeline, meaning he may try to help out his friend. Not to mention all of Spider-Man’s superhero friends that would no doubt be willing to help him out.
