"8: Compression"

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Bullet Time: When a mad bomber situation escalates, Izuku's senses supercharge to the point where "the air feels more like an ocean of cardboard at this speed than water", allowing him to rescue a group of civilians from a bomb explosion in a fraction of a second.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: When Izuku describes how he thinks of his power as a "broken, crazy thing that no one can explain", Kābā points out that that definition applies to quirks too.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: As his friends lay out how much his life is like an anime, Midorya silently humors the idea by listing off Stain as the "Evil Rival" and the beginning of his "series" being when he met All Might, a fact that was the case in the original manga and anime.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: When Izuku enters Bullet Time, it isn't portrayed like a person moving at regular speed while Time Stands Still like most examples. Here, Izuku's body moves at slow speed due to how his breathing can't keep up and his ability to move being handicapped because he's trying to move faster than the air around him can be displaced. By the time he manages to Super-Speed all of the civilians present out of danger, he's on the verge of suffocating from the strain of it.
  • Useless Useful Non-Combat Abilities: As Kābā marvels at Izuku's hero analysis journals and the sheer level of detail they have, Izuku mentions that analysis of quirks and heroes has no real world practical applications in the job market beyond insurance and accounting.
Izuku: The only people who really use analysis are insurance companies and accounting firms that specialize in Heroics. Predicting the heroics market is just a parlor trick, or a hobby.
  • Vengeance Feels Empty: While Izuku found his defeat of Rappa satisfying, he doesn't think the same way with Overhaul, his aggression over the inherent injustice of the way he treated Eri not having gone away.
