Recap / Tracker S1E21 "What Lies Beneath"

Go To

Zin's people develop a weapon that removes a Cirronian's powers, effective rendering them human and easy to kill. Zin tests it on a Cirronian fugitive before shooting him with a gun. Nestov comes to the bar to warn Cole about it, and they infiltrate Zin's headquarters. They manage to retrieve the weapon and return to Cole's room, where Nestov shoots Cole with it, revealing that he's been working for Zin. He ties Cole and Mel up in Cole's room and kicks all the customers out of the bar. Zin and his people arrive and start digging. Mel accidentally activates the collector, revealing her Cirronian ancestry. Cole explains that, long ago, his people sent our agent to a distant star system and left behind protectors. He assumes they must have interbred with humans, and Mel is one of their descendants. He guides her to use her energy to restore his powers. He takes out Zin's goons, but Nestov claims to have been a double agent and argues his innocence. Cole realizes that Zin is after Strada Brac, an ancient Vardian superweapon, capable of wiping out an entire star system. Apparently, Cirronian agents stole the weapon and hid it away on Earth, right under Mel's bar. Cole follows Zin, who has already opened the vault and taken the weapon. Zin claims to want to force the Migar System into peace under the threat of Strada Brac. Cole thinks that Zin merely wants to pay everyone back for not recognizing his genius. They fight, and Cole manages to push Zin into the vault just as the doors are closing, trapping him forever. Cole and Mel leave to find a new hiding place for Strada Brac, leaving Nestov in charge of the bar.

Tropes:

  • Apocalypse How: The Strada Brac can use antimatter to annihilate an entire star system. If used in Migar, the reaction would also traverse the wormhole and destroy Earth.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Zin is the only opponent capable of matching Cole blow-for-blow, even though he's a scientist. He also seems to possess some Cirronian powers, despite being a Vardian, including Super-Speed and Power Palms. No other Vardian has been shown with these abilities, suggesting that Zin may be part-Cirronian or found some way to give himself these powers.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Zin's weapon removes a Cirronian's powers, making them almost human. Zin first tests it on a Cirronian named Reta, before shooting him with a human gun to see if he would die. He does. Nestov then uses it on Cole.
  • Canon Discontinuity: Previously, it was stated several times that the Migar System is 100 light years from Earth. Here, Cole starts talking about the Migar Galaxy and how it's immeasurably far away from Earth. In the following episode, he goes right back to talking about 100 light years.
  • Fake Defector: Nestov claims to be this after Cole dispatches Zin's goons. Mel and Cole have a hard time trusting him.
  • Kill Me Now, or Forever Stay Your Hand: When Mel insists on taking Nestov's life force, Nestov stands in front of her and tells her to do it herself, if she doesn't believe him. She decides not to.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Zin. Also, when Mel asks who in their right mind would build such a weapon, Cole answers "Vardians."
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: The Strada Brac, an ancient Vardian superweapon, capable of annihilating an entire star system. It was stolen by Cirronian agents and hidden away on Earth. The Cirronians then interbred with humans to leave behind protectors. One of them, Mel's grandmother, ended up building a bar right on top of the vault. By the end of the episode, one evil in the vault is replaced by another - Zin. Except the vault is designed to be only opened once before it seals itself forever.
  • Secret Legacy: Mel learns that she's part-Cirronian when she unintentionally activates the collector.
  • Who's Laughing Now?: Cole realizes that this has been Zin's endgame all along. He wants to use the Strada Brac to show the entire Migar System that they should have valued him as a scientist, either by forcing them to bow down to him or by blowing up the system.
