College Interview
Clay wakes up in hospital and says he needs to attend his college interviews however he's told he must remain where is as he's under observation.
At the school, the rest of the students are meeting with college recruiters to discuss their admissions. Tyler's interview shows him admitted he finds guns beautiful but deadly. He explains his interest in photography and that guns were what his latest project was about.
In hospital, Justin apologises to Clay for not being there for him however Clay just says he's scared. He doesn't want Justin to stay as he feels embarrassed and asks him to go.
Ani's arrived back and walks in on Jessica and Diego at home as Jessica tries to get him out the window. Meanwhile, Winston and Estela have seemingly pieced together something from the football book. Winston deduces that Justin must have been involved in Bryce's murder and thinks Jessica is in on covering it up.
Alex overhears Sheriff Diaz talking to his dad about Ani's interview on Bryce's murder. Tony asks Tyler why he made his last project about guns but Tyler only confronts him about his lack of trust considering all the progress he'd made over the year. Justin asks Jessica why she's still with Diego. Jessica says that she's only with him to keep him away from the truth.
Clay tells hospital staff that he's had an accident and needs to clean up. He takes the chance to escape and meets up with Ani. Ani tells him that she wrote and submitted his college application for him, erasing the one he'd written about covering up a murder. Instead of being thankful, Clay accuses her of intruding on his life.
Charlie begins following Alex around all day. Despite them sharing a kiss, Alex is now avoiding Charlie and telling him to go away, questioning Charlie about why he'd even like him anyway. Justin confronts Zach about telling Winston about his involvement in Bryce's murder.
Back at Jessica's house, Ani is apologising to Jessica about sleeping with Bryce. She explains that she was lonely and not thinking about the consequences or the effect it would have on her friends. She announces that she's going to move out and live with Tony and Caleb instead.
Clay arrives at Dr. Ellman's house after hours of pacing the park. Dr. Ellman asks Clay to think of a time when he felt safe. Clay tells him about a time when he was sick and his dad was there for him. Later on, Clay's parents arrive to pick him up, relieved that he's safe.
Jessica has her college interview and she's asked about her experiences involving change. She talks about two friends who made changes they can't take back. Those friends being Hannah Baker and Alex Standall. During Alex's interview, he expresses how he feels he doesn't deserve to go to college. Ani's interview also goes strangely after she tells her recruiter that she thinks her friends only seeing what she wants them to see and she doesn't actually know who she is.
At school, Justin is told by Deputy Standall that his mother has died, likely from a drugs overdose. Justin prefers to stay at school but he later cries in the bathrooms. When his interview comes up, he reveals to the recruiter that he had a heroin addiction and to fund it, he had done sex work. He believes that his mother was never given a chance and now she's dead, too.
Tony goes to the sheriff's office and sees Officer Ted. He overhears other officers talking about a gun deal that involves Tyler. Tony goes to Clay to ask him for help, however Clay declines as his mental health is at rock bottom.
During his interview, Clay states that his friends are the most important thing to him and that he'd do anything to help them. He says that he's trying to do the right thing.
Matt and Lainie Jensen discuss funeral options for Justin's mother however, Justin is fed up with all the suggestions, saying he doesn't want a funeral for her. When they don't drop the subject, Justin screams at them and storms to his room, crying on the bed.
Ani meets up with Mrs. Walker, having kept in touch since being away. Ani breaks down crying, admitting that she feels like a failure. Mrs. Walker offers her to take Bryce's college fund which Ani rejects. Alex is secretly taking photos of their meeting from a distance.
Zach arranges a meet-up at the pier with Diego and some of the other members of the football team. When he arrives, Zach begins taunting Diego who loses his temper and starts beating Zach up. Rather than fighting back, Zach takes each punch, envisioning himself beating up Bryce on the night he died.
Clay shows up outside the gun deal meet-up where Tony is waiting outside. He gets into Tony's car as Tyler is shown coming into view. Tony and Clay chase after Tyler, who they believe is in danger, and frantically ask him to leave with them as the gun dealer arrives. Suddenly, police sirens echo in the area and everyone panics. The dealer points the gun at Tyler's head as Clay screams not to shoot. The gun goes off.
