It's June 2023. Susannah has died and Belly, Steven, and Laurel are grieving very differently. Belly feels lost after both Jeremiah and Conrad stopped speaking to her. Steven tries to move forward in Susannah's spirit, is headed to Princeton in the autumn, and is valedictorian for his class, while secretly harbouring feelings for Taylor, who is in a relationship. Laurel can't bear to deal with Susannah's death and shows signs of depression; not eating, forgetting things, which has caused Belly to take on adult responsibilities.

• The Reveal: Susannah has died. It's not stated when, but alluded to have been fairly recently.
• Therapy Is for the Weak: When Laurel reiterates her refusal to promote the book she wrote about Beck, John brings up that Laurel refused to go to therapy, and she reiterates that choice as well.
• Time Skip: The present day story takes place at the beginning of the next summer. Steven's a senior and headed to Princeton. Susannah had died at some point between December 2022 and now.
• Unrequited Love Switcheroo: Steven seems to have developed/be facing feelings for Taylor, who is now in a relationship with an aspiring musician.
